Trucking Industry in the United States

The United States currently stands at the number one spot when it comes to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the trucking industry. The GDP of the trucking industry is higher than that of 150 nations in the entire world. So, what exactly does this mean? With the growth of e-commerce and online shopping, the trucking industry has grown and adapted influencing positive growth for the trucking industry.

The trucking industry takes up a notable chunk of the U.S. employee market with more than 5.8% of jobs in the country being related to the trucking industry. The trucking industry is expected to grow by potentially another 5% in the next ten years, creating more and more jobs. In the first half of 2020, when the pandemic first hit the States, the trucking industry slowed down, but after the second quarter of the year, the trucking industry started booming. There is an ever-growing demand for truck drivers and experts believe that the trucking industry needs to hire at least 900,000 more people to meet the growing demand for truck drivers in the coming years.

Walmart currently stands as a company that has the number of most hired drivers, standing at 8,600 as of October 2020. This is expected to continue to grow as the industry grows and demand for truck drivers grows as well.

In the U.S., trucks carried approximately 10.8 billion tons of goods across the country. To transport these goods across the country, many truck drivers put in countless hours into the work that they do, and the average truck driver logs in more than 100,000 miles every single year. Many diverse industries rely on the trucking industry to transport goods and keep things in stock to sell to consumers.

Almost 70% of the goods transported in the country are carried around by trucks from one state to another. Truck transportation is often the best option for companies to transport goods because many trucking companies are able to offer different types of freight trucks to their customers, making truck transportation the quickest and most reliable method since it is transporting the goods from the origin straight to its final destination.

The trucking industry has an incredible amount of diversity with more than 40% of the jobs being held by minorities. The trucking industry is starting to become an appealing career path for younger generations as well as “non-traditional” candidates because of the freedom of the schedule, the greater control over their income and the ability to potentially own their own business.

Grocery stores are incredibly dependent on truck drivers to carry their goods and most grocery stores would run out within three days if truck drivers stopped delivering their goods. Without a continuous supply from trucks, grocery stores would quickly run out of basic essentials.
